We present a recently developed nonlinear model based on the constitut
ive undercooling mechanism to explain oscillatory zoning in plagioclas
e. It uses diffusion-controlled growth kinetics coupled with a nonline
ar partition relation. Regular oscillatory zoning, period doubling seq
uence and chaotic zoning are possible for realistic choices of paramet
ers. This model captures the essential features observed in actual cry
stals.
