Fgwc. Paas et Jjg. Vanmerrienboer, THE EFFICIENCY OF INSTRUCTIONAL CONDITIONS - AN APPROACH TO COMBINE MENTAL EFFORT AND PERFORMANCE-MEASURES, Human factors, 35(4), 1993, pp. 737-743
This article reports on a calculational approach for combining measure
s of mental workload and task performance that allows one to obtain in
formation on the relative efficiency of instructional conditions. The
method is based on the standardization of raw scores for mental effort
and task performance to z scores, which are displayed in a cross of a
xes. Relative condition efficiency is calculated as the perpendicular
distance to the line that is assumed to represent an efficiency of zer
o. We conclude that the method for calculating and representing relati
ve condition efficiency discussed here can be a valuable addition to r
esearch on the training and performance of complex cognitive tasks.
