A novel conjugated polymeric salt having two cyclic recurring units pe
r monmeric unit was prepared by the cyclopolymerization of tripropargy
lammonium bromide(TPAB) with transition metal catalysts. PdCl2, PtCl2,
MoCl5, WCl6-based catalysts were found to be effective for the polyme
rization of TPAB. The obtained poly(TPAB)s were insoluble in any organ
ic solvent regardless of the polymerization catalysts and conditions u
sed. The IR spectra of poly(TPAB) showed neither the acetylenic hydrog
en nor the carbon-carbon triple bond stretching frequencies. Instead,
the carbon-carbon double bond stretching frequency in the polymer back
bone at 1640 cm-1 indicated a highly conjugated unsaturation. The ther
mal and morphological properties of poly(TPAB) were also studied.
