Abstract
New cation exchangers based on the monomer, N-(3-hydroxy-4-acetylpenyl )maleimide (HAPM) were prepared, i.e. poly(HAPM), HAPM-styrene copolym er by addition polymerization and HAPM-maleic anhydride-styrene terpol ymer by polymer modification reaction of HAPM and styrene-maleic anhyd ride copolymer. These polymers were characterized by elemental analysi s, number average molecular weight (MnBAR), IR spectral analysis, H-1- NMR spectra and thermogravimetry. The preliminary results of ion excha nge studies by batch method are promising and shows the possibility of the use of these polymers in the selective separation of several impo rtant metal ions.
