Jr. Patel et al., PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND COORDINATION TENDENCIES OF SOME NEW POLYMERIC LIGANDS, Pure and applied chemistry, A31, 1994, pp. 357-370
Poly [1,3 (2-ethoxy-4-hydroxy-5-propylphenylene) butylene] was prepare
d by Friedel-Craft polycondensation of 2-hydroxy-4-ethoxypropiophenone
and 1,4-butane diol in presence of polyphosphoric acid catalyst. The
polymer sample was characterized by IR spectra, elemental analysis and
its number-average molecular weight (MnBAR) determined by nonaqueous
titration. With the aim at providing some answers to questions regardi
ng the co-ordination tendencies of polymeric ligand, we have investiga
ted some transition metal derivatives. All the compounds are of the ty
pe [ML2]n where M = Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+ L = 2-hydroxy-4-et
hoxypropiophenone-1,4-butane diol resin. Structures of the polymeric c
helates are deduced from IR and electronic spectra, magnetic propertie
s and elemental analysis. The combined evidences provide information r
egarding co-ordination mode of resin involving the donor oxygen of car
bonyl group and consequently indicating square planar co-ordination ar
ound Cu2+, tetrahedral co-ordination around Zn2+ and octahedral co-ord
ination around Mn2+, Co2+ and Ni2+. Analytical data also support 1:2 m
etal: legand stoichiometry.
