La. Bijlmakers, DIRECTORY OF SOCIOBEHAVIORAL RESEARCH ON HIV-INFECTION AND AIDS IN ZIMBABWE, Central African Journal of Medicine, 39(2), 1993, pp. 37-39
In July-August 1992, a directory was made of research projects on soci
o-behavioural aspects of HIV infection and AIDS in Zimbabwe. A total o
f 92 research projects were identified, most of which were already com
pleted. Whilst there was a wide variety of topics, populations and geo
graphical areas covered, there was a strong bias towards AIDS awarenes
s and knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) studies. Many of these
were not linked with any specific AIDS prevention programme or with po
licy making. Suggestions are given to make better use of existing scie
ntific information. A call is made upon researchers to conduct action-
oriented studies and to consult HIV/AIDS programme implementers when s
pecifying 'researchable' problems, so as to increase the likelihood th
at the study results will indeed have an impact on policy making and p
rogramme implementation.
