A prospective study of 20 patients with traumatic amputations of the f
ingers and a thumb was carried out during a six week period at Mpilo C
entral Hospital, Bulawayo. Most of the adult injuries (17 patients) re
sulted from industrial accidents (76,5 pc) while two out the three chi
ldren sustained their injury from domestic accidents. Inadequate safet
y precaution, ignorance and human error contributed significantly to t
he injuries. Safety education and preventive measures both at home and
in industry should be inculcated into the daily life of individuals.
