The spin dynamics of the muonium (mu+ e- or Mu) atom diffusing in soli
d nitrogen ((N2)-N-14) has been studied using the techniques of muoniu
m spin rotation and relaxation. The temperature dependence of the Mu h
op rate tau(c)-1 reveals that Mu diffusion in solid nitrogen is a quan
tum tunneling process governed by the two-phonon interaction. At low t
emperatures the Mu atom is strongly localized by suppression of band m
otion due to interaction with defects.
