Ac. Harrington et T. Stasko, RADIATION-INDUCED ADIPOSIS OF THE PAROTID-GLAND, The Journal of dermatologic surgery and oncology, 20(4), 1994, pp. 246-250
Radiation-induced changes to the parotid gland may complicate later su
rgery for new or recurrent tumors of the area. Radiation commonly caus
es the replacement of parotid parenchyma by adipose cells as well as f
ibrosis and glandular atrophy. If the Mohs micrographic surgeon is not
prepared for the gross and microscopic changes which may be present i
n the parotid gland, neighboring structures such as the facial nerve m
ay be inadvertently encountered and tumor depth and extent may be poor
ly estimated. By discussing and illustrating this situation, we hope t
o make other surgeons aware of the difficulties which may be present a
fter radiation to the parotid gland.
