Abstract
This paper proposes a method of designing reinforced concrete elements subject to transient loading based upon closed solutions of approxima te mathematical models of the structure. The approximations in the mod el relate to the way in which the reinforced concrete element is ideal ized, and also to the way in which the load/time history of the elemen t is simplified, The paper offers expressions for the parameters requi red to apply an elastic/plastic technique to reinforced concrete, Furt hermore, the presence of damping, which is often ignored in simple dyn amic models, is also included here, Calibration of the proposed model to existing test results and sophisticated nonlinear finite-element me thods illustrates excellent correlation.
