Abstract
A digital fault location algorithm for calculating the fault distance on a power transmission line can be designed using any of three approa ches: the steady-state phasor approach, the differential equation appr oach and the travelling-wave approach. In this paper, the algorithms u tilizing the differential equation and the travelling-wave approach ar e reviewed. The effect of various algorithms on the relay speed and ac curacy is examined. The associated filtering techniques are discussed.
