Abstract
An accurate formalism is developed to treat the loss of nuclear alignm ent due to vacuum deorientation in the case where the nucleus decays t hrough a sequence of excited states. Comparisons are made between the exact and simpler, approximate treatments. The implications for the an alysis of recoil-distance lifetime measurements are discussed.
