A gas chromatographic (GC) method was developed for the identification
of grayanotoxins (G), I, II, and III, which are toxic diterpenoids of
Leucothoe grayana MAX. GC was done with stainless steel capillary col
umns (CB 17-M 15-025, 15 m, which corresponds to OV-17), with programm
ing from 200 to 300-degrees-C at 10-degrees-C/min. Grayanotoxins with
C3-OH and C6-OH gave split peaks on chromatograms. The concentration o
f grayanotoxins and their GC peak area were directly proportional. Thi
s method was used for the identification of grayanane compounds in tox
ic honey.
