Abstract
Different soil management techniques, as cultivation, cultivation plus green manuring, both with or without fumigation, were applied to cont rol the replant problem in apple. Effects of treatments were evaluated during the initial four years of training by monitoring vegetative ac tivity and yield of 'Granny Smith'/M9 trees. Green manure induced earl ier cropping and temporarily counteracted growth depression. Cultivati on positively affected yield only at the third year after planting. So il fumigation did not consistently influence vegetation and yield. Dat a analysed in the original spatial position by contouring techniques, demonstrated that replant problems occurred particularly in the centra l areas between the rows of the pre-existing orchard.
