Abstract
Phytoene synthase encoded by the crtB gene is one of the rate-limiting enzymes for carotenoid production in Thermus thermophilus. We introdu ced a multicopy recombinant plasmid, pCOP1, in which the Thermus crtB gene was cloned, into carotenoid overproducing mutants of T. thermophi lus. The overproducing mutants carrying pCOP1 produced about twenty ti mes as much carotenoids as the parental strain did.
