The availability of marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis cysts for aqu
aculture has long been suggested. Only a few studies, however, reporte
d trials of mass formation of rotifer cysts as well as their applicati
on to aquaculture. The current paper summarizes our works relating to
those topics, which are based on accumulated fundamental information o
n B. plicatilis cyst formation. These include the selection of prefera
ble rotifer clones, use of preserved diets for cyst formation, bacteri
al effect on rotifer sexual reproduction, actual trials of cyst format
ion and application of rotifer cysts for larval rearing practices.
