etralone 4 react with acetoacetanilide 5 yielding 2-oxo-4-aryl-3-carbo
xylic acid anilides derivatives of naphthalene 7, indene 8, fluorene 9
and phenanthrene 10. Reaction of 1 and 3 with benzoylacetanilide 6 yi
elds the corresponding Michael adducts 11 and 12.
