We have observed the coherence between the photoionization of two diff
erent inner-shell vacancy states of argon, the energies of which diffe
r by more than 75 eV. The method is based on the occurrence of interfe
rences between the photo- and Auger electrons resulting from the photo
ionization and subsequent Auger decay of the two states concerned. The
measured line profile of the interference structure can be well expla
ined using the theory of van den Brink et al. on state-state interfere
nces.
