Abstract
Experiments were performed on the lateral transport kinetics of wettin g layers. Optically excited surface plasmons were used to study both t he spreading behaviour of silicon oil and the equilibration dynamics o f ethanol. The precursor film profiles of silicon oil were found to ag ree well with the theory of viscous flow of nonvolatile liquids. For e thanol, evaporation effects and viscous transport could be observed se parately. Apparently, the viscous transport is suppressed by almost tw o orders of magnitude. Possible explanations are discussed.
