Abstract
Complete solid state Raman (460-50 cm-1) and far-IR (460-100 cm-1) spe ctra are reported for Ph3SnX(X = Cl, Br, I) and Ph4Sn. The assignments reaffirm and clarify those given earlier, particularly for nu SnX and are consistent with all Ph3SnX being monomeric. Preliminary results f rom X-ray analysis show Ph3SnI is triclinic, space group P1BAR, with Z = 4. The Ph3SnI molecules have almost trigonal symmetry around the ti n while shortest intermolecular d(Sn---I) values are > 6.3 angstrom.
