R. Krishnamurthy et al., EFFECT OF AIR-POLLUTION ON SOME BUND TREES OF THE AGRICULTURAL LANDS, Journal of environmental biology, 15(2), 1994, pp. 97-106
Streblus asper, Capparis spinosa and Zizyphus jujuba, were more preval
ent on the agricultural lands that were exposed to mixed air pollutant
s from the Gujarat state fertilizer corporation (GSFC). Dimorphic leav
es were common in S. asper. The leaves facing the emission source were
smaller than those on the opposite side. The leaves also absorbed mor
e sulphur, synthesizing more glutathione and amino acid, and maintaini
ng a higher levels of sugars, phenols and ascorbic acid. Probably thes
e characteristics along with the production of dimorphic leaves made t
he survival of this species possible under chronic low levels of air p
ollutants.
