Abstract
The feasibility of observing the thermal self-action of ultrasound in the isotropic phase of a liquid crystal near the ''nematic liquid'' ph ase transition is evaluated. The process of thermal self-bleaching is shown to dominate in MBBA crystals at moderate levels of ultrasound in put intensity, which increases the ultrasound penetration depth by mor e than an order of a magnitude.
