Much has been written about power which seems to be of interest to the
various professions including nursing. One theory, which asserts that
the urge to dominate (i.e. the imbalance of power over love) is the s
ource of most difficulty in human relationships, seems to have receive
d little attention. The authors, therefore, decided to examine the nur
sing literature for evidence of power/love imbalances. Such evidence w
as discovered and, in this paper, this evidence is presented and the p
otential impact of such imbalances on nursing, particularly nursing re
search, theory and practice is considered.
