Hypochlorite interaction with ferrous ions was investigated by means o
f chemiluminescence assay. It was demonstrated that HOCl and Fe2+ reac
tion produces a fast flash with the maximal amplitude at 1 second. The
comparison of the chemiluminescent spectra obtained in reactions of F
e2+ with HOCl and H2O2 demonstrated that both spectra bad their maxima
l absorbance in the region 500 - 510 nm. The addition of a spin trap (
C-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone) quenched chemiluminescence in both syst
ems in a concentration dependent manner. The obtained results allowed
us to suggest that the nature of the particles produced in the reactio
ns of Fe2+ with HOCl or H2O2 is simular.
