Abstract
Michael Porter has provided the first hopeful analysis of the American ghetto economy in thirty years. His perspective is derived from his n otion of creating competitive economics. Porter's conceptualization of a competitive ghetto, while inspiring, lacks a strong grounding in gh etto and community economic development. This essay suggests an altern ative but complementary paradigm far the economic repositioning of Ame rica's most distressed communities.
