Abstract
The authors propose a new type of fibre, the birefringent splittable c omposite (BISPEC) fibre designed for polarisation maintaining optical devices. In addition to the good polarisation axis alignment (within 1 -degrees), this fibre has the added important property that it can rea dily be split to allow for standard fibre connection by fusion splicin g.
