Melanotus textilis (Strophariaceae), a small saprobic agaric, exhibits
a bifactorial (tetrapolar) mating system based on the formation of cl
amp connections. The mating system is the same as that of M. defraudat
us but differs from that of M. hartiae, which is unifactorial (bipolar
). Matings from different populations of M. textilis show that the loc
us controlling mating compatibility is multiallelic. Asexual reproduct
ion by arthroconidia was also observed.
