Gelasinospora hippopotama n. sp. is described and illustrated by both
light and scanning electron microscopy. The diagnostic features are th
e unusual side view of the ascospores, multiple germ pores, variable p
it morphology and inwardly projecting shallow spinules in the spore wa
ll. The presence of multiple germ pores is considered to be a recent e
volutionary development. The taxon probably has a pantropical distribu
tion being known from Africa and Venezuela.
