We have synthesized novel mixed-ligand complexes of zinc(II) and cadmi
um(II) diethyldithiocarbamates ZnL2(2,2'-Bipy) (1), Zn2L4(4,4'-Bipy) (
2), and CdL2(4,4'-Bipy) (3), where L = (C2H5)2NCS2-. An X-ray structur
al study, of zinc complexes 1 and 2 has been carried out. The structur
e of complex 1 is characterized by monomeric molecules of symmetry 2.
In the crystal structure of complex 2, there are two independent binuc
lear molecules of the same point symmetry 2. It is shown that not only
the mononuclear mixed-ligand complexes ML2 with Phen and 2,2'-Bipy (M
= Zn, Cd) but also the binuclear Zn2L4(4,4'-Bipy) complex are volatil
