New compounds MA2RECu2O8-delta (M = Nb or Ta, A = Ba or Sr, and RE = P
r or Sm) have been prepared and characterized. Structural analysis rev
ealed that they crystallize in a 1-2-1-2 TaBa2LaCu2O8-delta structure
type similar to that of YBa2Cu3O7. Cations such as Nb3+, Ta5+, and Ru4
+ are accommodated in the basal plane and the double CuO2 pyramidal pl
anes are maintained. All the compounds show semiconducting behavior. W
ith Ru substitution the formal copper valence increases from +2 to abo
