The intersublattice exchange fields are calculated ab-initio within th
e local-spin-density approximation and the linear-muffin-tin-orbital t
heory. The results for various Gd compounds (GdCo5, GdFe11Ti, GdFe11Ti
N, Gd2Fe17, Gd2Fe17C3, Gd2Fe17N3) are compared with data from inelasti
c neutron scattering experiments. The exchange fields of GdFe11Ti and
Gd2Fe17 decrease upon interstitial doping with N and C.
