Abstract
Several chemical treatments were applied to a vitrain sample. It is as sumed that structural modifications play an important role in subseque nt solubilization by a methanol-NaOH mixture. The gradual changes of t he main functional groups after chemical pretreatment and solubilizati on reaction were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT-i.r.) and diffuse reflectance infrared (DRIFT) spectroscopy. The influence of th e structural changes on the behaviour of the samples in solvent extrac tion (conversion) has been studied by sonication experiments, carried out before and after pretreatment and solubilization reaction.
