Environmental considerations have stimulated research in organic pigme
nt surface modification as well as polymeric dispersant application to
lower the viscosities of modem high-solids pigment dispersions. The a
pproach involves adsorption of specific substituted pigment derivative
s (anchors) onto the pigment surface to maximize interaction with sele
cted polymeric dispersants. More effective anchors have been found whi
ch further lower the viscosities of high-solids solvent-based paint sy
stems.
