Jv. Hatfield et al., TOWARDS AN INTEGRATED ELECTRONIC NOSE USING CONDUCTING POLYMER SENSORS, Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical, 18(1-3), 1994, pp. 221-228
This paper describes progress that has been made towards realizing an
artificial nose based on arrays of conducting polymers. Electrically c
onducting organic polymers based on heterocyclic molecules display rev
ersible changes in conductivity when exposed to polar volatile chemica
ls. In the sensor described, the polymers are interrogated for resista
nce changes by means of an application-specific integrated circuit (AS
IC) realized in BiCMOS technology. The ASIC and the polymer array arc
housed on a single thick-film ceramic substrate.
