Synthetic schemes have been developed and optimized for the preparatio
n of groups of 4,4'-diamino- and 4,4'-dihydroxytriarylethanes with an
ethynyl group pendent on the third aryl group. Palladium(0)-catalyzed
reaction of an aryl halide moiety with an acetylene is used for the at
tachment of the ethynyl group. The third aryl group is either a phenyl
or a phenoxyphenyl group, while the other end of the ethynyl group is
either unprotected or bears an n-butyl or phenyl group. The variation
s in the structure of the third aryl group and the cap on its acetylen
e group are chosen to probe their influence on the mechanical properti
es of the resulting crosslinked thermoplastics.
