Abstract
Continuous fermentation with cell recycle proved very effective in inc reasing the ethanol volumetric productivity of the thermophilic facult ative anaerobe, Bacillus stearothermophilus strain LLD-15, on sucrose at 70 degrees C. When complete cell recycle was used, cell viability d ecreased after a few residence times and sucrose consumption was reduc ed. Operation using a constant bleed rate resulted in greater stabilit y and higher ethanol volumetric productivities. A mathematical model b ased on maintenance energy requirements provided an adequate descripti on of the system. (C) 1994 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
