A transmission-type X-ray phase retarder (XPR) using an absorptive cry
stal in Laue diffraction geometry is discussed. Polarization conversio
n property of the XPR was tested using synchrotron radiation. Energy d
ependence of the phase shift reveals that this XPR becomes a quarter-w
ave plate at a certain energy value and a half-wave plate at another e
nergy value. The achievement of easier helicity switching taking advan
tage of the crystal symmetry is demonstrated.
