Transparent nanocrystalline ZnO films have been prepared on a conducti
ng glass substrate by sol-gel techniques. Their sensitization by adsor
ption of a ruthenium-based complex and subsequent incorporation as the
light harvesting unit in a regenerative photoelectrochemical cell are
described. The resulting device has a monochromatic incident photon-t
o-current conversion efficiency of 13% at 520 nm.
