There is a need for materials and battings which provide fire resistan
t properties and are lightweight, washable, and aesthetically acceptab
le. Thermal properties of batts constructed from a new carbonaceous fi
ber were evaluated to determine its usefulness in military and commeri
cal applications for thermal and fire protection. Carbonaceous batts w
ere compared to batts available in commerical and military products on
thermal transmittance (conductance and resistance) and thermal protec
tive performance. Results indicated that experimental batts could be c
onstructed to provide insulation comparable to available products. The
rmal protective performance tests indicated that the carbonaceous batt
s provided flame protection superior to current military and commerica
l products.
