In the present report we show that induction of expression of a differ
entiated phenotype in cultured retinal pigmented epithelium of chick e
mbryo is accompanied by coordinate regulation of expression and distri
bution of two adhesion-related nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases, p
p60(c-src) and pp125(FAK). pp60(c-src) translocates from the cell surf
ace in flat undifferentiated cells to the nucleus in the packed differ
entiated cells. In contrast, pp125(FAK), abundant in focal adhesions o
f flat undifferentiated cells, is downregulated in cells that have dif
ferentiated and packed into an epithelial sheet.
