Mj. Martindale, MENTAL MODELS AND TEXT SCHEMAS - WHY COMPUTER-BASED TUTORIALS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A COMMUNICATION MEDIUM, Journal of computer-based instruction, 20(4), 1993, pp. 107-112
This paper argues that the traditional view that computer users have t
o form a mental model of a computer based tutorial is wrong. It sugges
ts that, rather, such users need to form text schemas and that tutoria
ls should be viewed as a communication medium. The paper suggests that
tutorials be considered to be like books, and that hypertext may be t
he best structure for them.
