Abstract
Intraaortic balloon counterpulsation was used to wean a 71-year-old ma n from cardiopulmonary bypass. Thirty-six hours after insertion, the i nternal lumen of the Datascope balloon fractured, releasing an unknown quantity of helium into the patient's circulation. Left-sided hemipar esis developed, secondary to a right hemispheric infarction.
