Fourier transform infra-red (FTi.r.) spectroscopy was used to investig
ate the orientation of uniaxially stretched films of poly(vinyl phenol
) (PVPh). The alpha angles of the various vibrations were determined w
ith respect to the CH2...CH2 axis. No evidence was found for any influ
ence of the hydrogen bonds on the orientation of PVPh when compared to
polystyrene (PS). On the other hand, it was noted that, upon formatio
n of hydrogen bonds, the alpha angle of the hydroxyl groups changes fr
om 26 to 65-degrees.
