The synthesis and molecular structure determination of an organophosph
orus carbohydrate are reported. In the solid state the molecules of me
thyl xy-3-C-diphenyl-phosphinyl-alpha-D-altropyranoside are linked tog
ether by intermolecular hydrogen bonding involving the oxygen attached
to phosphorus and the hydroxy group. The five-valent phosphorus atom
is in a distorted tetrahedral environment. The chiral molecules crysta
llize in the monoclinic space group P2(1) with Z = 2. Results from H-1
, C-13 and P-31 NMR investigations together with IR data are presented
