The crystal and molecular structures of 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarboxa
ldehyde (I) and 3-Hydroxy-2-naphthalenecaeooxaldehyde (II) were determ
ined. Compound (I) crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/n with a = 5.
589(2), b = 9.352(2), and c = 15.490(3) angstrom, beta = 98.14(3)degre
es, and Z = 4. Compound (II) crystallizes in P2(1)/n with a = 16.831(1
1), b = 5.936(3), and c = 8.295(3) angstrom beta = 97.24(5)degrees, an
d Z = 4. The structures were solved by direct methods, and refined by
full-matrix least squares to R = 0.071 and R(w) = 0.083 for I, and R =
0.047 and R(w) = 0.061 for II.
