Research was performed on the manifestation and inheritance of two spo
ntaneous mutations isolated from different rye populations and causing
desynapsis and decreased ferfility. Both mutations are inherited mono
genically. The genes were designated sy7 and sy10; allelism was not st
udied. The mutants differed in the degree of chromosome coiling, the n
umber of chiasmata per bivalent, and the frequency of univalents in me
taphase and of chromosome bridges in anaphases. The sy10 mutants exhib
ited chromatin links between homologous and nonhomologous chromosomes
in diakinesis and metaphase I of nonchiosmatic origin. In sublines tha
t segregated at the gene sy10 two sterile triploid plants and two plan
ts that were heterozygous at the translocation were detected.
