In a 2factorial trial, lasting 6 weeks, 6 x 8 piglets (initial weight
8.2 kg) were used to examine the feeding of white lupins (Lupinus albu
s L., var. Lublanc). 0 %, 10 % and 20 % lupins were fed. For the secon
d factor soybean meal was replaced and the rations were supplemented w
ith the essential amino acids or soybean meal and fishmeal were replac
ed. All diets were formulated to be isonitrogeneous (21 % XP in dry ma
tter (DM)) and isoenergetic (14.2 MJ ME per kg DM). By feeding of 10 %
and 20 % lupins daily weight gains were significantly reduced by 13 %
and 28 %, respectively, over the whole rearing period compared to the
control groups. This was a consequence of the reduced feed intake of
12 % or 25 %, respectively. Feed efficiency was reduced significantly
when 20 % lupins were given. Similar results were determined in the di
fferent rearing periods. This means that the feeding of white lupins t
o piglets will result in reduced performance. Possible factors are dis
cussed.
