This article is a non-technical introduction to intra- and inter-organ
izational network analysis. It comprises a general presentation of the
method's main principles and procedures, a number of studies using it
, and the problems which can arise when it is used for empirical resea
rch. Resemblances to strategic analysis a la francaise are described a
s well as with any inductive approach based on an ethnographical knowl
edge of the field. In this way, network analysis would seem on the one
hand to be a method which consolidates classical organizational theor
y by making abstract concepts operational, and on the other hand, to b
e a technical and conceptual stimulus for organization and economic so
ciology.
