Ss. Dritz et al., APPLICATION OF SEGREGATED EARLY WEANING TECHNOLOGY IN THE COMMERCIAL SWINE INDUSTRY, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 16(5), 1994, pp. 677-685
The implementation of segregated early weaning (SEW) programs can incr
ease the efficiency of swine production and improve health status. Thr
ough the use of multiple-site production and improved nutrition progra
ms, SEW technology has been applied in commercial swine operations. Se
gregated early weaning prevents vertical transmission of pathogens tha
t do not cross the placenta. Successful implementation of SEW programs
has been made possible by large strides in the nutrition and feeding
of very young pigs. Forming producer groups provides a means for effic
ient use of SEW technology. Producer groups provide members with a com
mon goal to harness the economies of scale.
