PIXE has been shown to be a powerful analytical tool for the analysis
of aerosol samples. To verify the accuracy of the analytical technique
reliable SRMs are of great importance. The problems connected with th
e use of aerosol SRMs are primarily: (1) a non homogeneous distributio
n of trace components in the sample and, (2) the SRM does not correspo
nd by elemental composition and backing material to a real sample. Var
ious aerosol SRMs were analyzed by the PIXE method and checked for agr
eement with the certified values. Advantages and drawbacks of the anal
yzed SRMs are discussed.
